There was time when bed bugs were not as dominant as they are today. However, due to a lot of things, they came back and caused havoc again.
The banning of the chemical pesticide called DDT is said one of the major reasons why those vampire-like insects are now on surge. Besides that, it is believed that the increase both in domestic and international travels is also a major player in their prevalence.
Among the states that are really feeling the resurgence of those pests is Kansas. Located in the mid-west part of the country, it hasn’t dealt with bed bug spread as worse as it is facing today.
According to one of the state’s pest-control businesses, the number of bed bugs is dramatically increasing in Kansas these days that they are now getting a number of calls regarding them every day.
Here is a part of a report discussing the increase of bed bugs in Kake, Kansas.
“Michael Patton has been in the pest control business for more than 30 years. In other words, he knows his stuff when it comes to bed bugs.
Patton says the pests have made a resurgence in the Wichita area in the past couple years. His company used to get bed bug calls once a month but that’s all changed.
“Now we’re getting a couple calls a day so it’s dramatically increasing,” Patton said.

But Kake is not the only place in Kansas that is suffering from bed bugs. Lawrence too is dealing with an augmenting bed bug problem.
A report from kansascity.com stated that those pests were becoming a huge problem particularly, in apartment complexes. And as it said, that’s because of the high turnover rate of apartment renters.
Below is a part of that report from kansascity.com.
“Lawrence officials are taking aim at a bed bug problem that’s emerging at apartment complexes with new rules allowing the city to tell people how and when to exterminate the critters.
City code enforcement manager Brian Jiminez says bed bugs are becoming an issue at apartment complexes because of the large turnover in tenants. The tiny insects can cause health problems because they bite their victims and suck their blood, sometimes without being noticed.”
To solve that said huge bed bug problem in Lawrence, or at least control it, a separate report from kctv5 related that leaders of the city were pushing a new bed bug ordinance. It was said scheduled to reach the city commission on Tuesday night.
Brian Jimenez, the city’s code enforcement manager, is one of the proponents of the proposed bed bug law. And according to him, many property owners don’t have any clue what to do when infested by those vampire-like pests that’s why he and the others drafted the ordinance.
The purpose of the said rule is to prevent tenants from moving to a new unit carrying the pests with them or transferring to a new place that is with a bed bug problem. Specifically, the news detailed that it requires any infestation to be treated only by licensed pest-control experts rather than just by the people themselves.

“The mere mention of the words bed bugs can be enough to set one’s skin crawling. The real thing can create real headaches for a community.
Like most college towns, the population in Lawrence tends to move around a lot, making it that much easier for bed bug infestations to spread.
But now, city leaders are looking to make changes to keep the problem in control.”

It can’t be denied that bed bugs are now really widespread. Almost everyday, there is news about them infesting or sighted somewhere.
But though small and terrible, bed bugs are not invincible. Sure thing, it’s hard to get rid of them. Nonetheless, with the right steps and help, you could surely spare your house from their presence.
Pros and Cons of a Heat Treatment
There are several ways of getting rid of bed bugs. But the one deemed most effective is the heat treatment. It is also the bed bug elimination method usually offered by pest-control companies. And the reason why it is not commonly executed for personal bed bug treatment is the fact that it takes quite some time and work.
In order to get it done, basically, the area or room infested would have to be exposed to a very high temperature for a number of hours. And because of the heating machine it needed, it is usually only completed if implemented by a pest-control company.
However, professional heat treatment is expensive. It could cost you around $1000. And because of that high price, it is usually reserved by bed bug victims as their last option for the pests’ elimination.
Given that, without any aid from the government, that proposed bed bug ordinance in Kansas would, therefore, be a big burden for the residents.
Personal Bed Bug Treatment
But let’s just say you’re not from Kansas or the proposed bed bug law in the state would not be passed and that you need to do the bed bug treatment by yourself. How, then, should you do it?
Below are the steps.
1. Know Bed Bugs
This speaks of knowing bed bugs from their appearance to their habits.
You should check bed bug pictures in all life stages. That way, you’ll be able to identify the pest, whether you found it as an egg, nymph or adult. With that, you could implement the right steps for an effective bed bug elimination.
Besides their appearance, you should also know where bed bugs hide. And basically, they love to stay in cracks, crevices and cool dark spaces. Knowing their favorite spots is handy when doing your bed bug inspection.
Some other little but important things you should know about them are:
- They feed at night and their bite is usually painless. That’s the reason why they are hard to catch in the act.
- They multiply fast that’s why you need to do the treatment right after you detected their presence.
- They could hide for a very long time without feeding. So, just because you don’t see them doesn’t mean that they are not present.
2. Locate Bed Bugs
This is where your knowledge about bed bugs’ favorite spots will come handy. As said, they love to hide in cracks, crevices and warm-dark places. Those are the areas that you first need to check. But know that bed bugs could hide anywhere. They are small enough to hide even in the smallest gaps in your furniture, so, every nook and cranny of your house must be inspected. Follow the bed bug signs of blood spots, dark fecal specks and discarded shells to easily find them.
3. Eliminate Bed Bugs
Once bed bugs are found, don’t waste anytime. Promptly conduct the bed bug treatment. And the only method that could let you do that is the use of a bed bug spray. With no other things to do than to spray the solution to the pests, the product makes the process fast and easy to complete.
But not all bed bug sprays work. Among them, you should pick Bed Bug Bully as it is effective and safe. It kills bed bugs just in seconds after it is applied.
EPA has also recognized Bed Bug Bully as pesticide-exempt. It was classified by the agency under FIFRA 25(b). And so, thanks to the absence of harmful chemicals in its content, it is safe for health and even the environment.
