An infestation of mold could lead to an unsafe living condition. There are many health risks associated with its presence, more so with its black mold variety. And according to a report, that’s the reason why one homeless shelter in Hampton Bays was forced to close.
Hidden Cove Motel was that shelter determined to be mold infested. It was initially a motel as its name indicated but was turned into a homeless shelter two years ago.
Actually, even before the black mold was discovered, the said shelter was already scheduled to close on September 30. That’s because its management failed to notify the town about its conversion. But due to the detection of black mold after an inspection by the officials of Suffolk County Department of Social Services (DSS) last month, its closure was hastened.
The said black mold was particularly infesting the basement of the building. And due to its detection, on July 31, two months prior the scheduled closure, the nine families living in the said facility were moved to various other shelters in the county.
