Mold Allergies Get Worse – No Thanks to Climate Change

That doctoral candidate was particularly Naama Lang-Yona. According to her findings, which was published in May in the journal Global Change Biology, the high level of carbon dioxide brought by global warming makes regular mold spores more allergenic by increasing the proteins in their coating.

Based on a study she conducted with colleagues, it was found out that today’s carbon dioxide level could increase the protein in the spores of a particular mold called Aspergillus fumigatus by 8.5 percent. And though further checking is still needed, she added that it is likely it could do the same to other old varieties.

“A common fungus tends to grow more allergenic traits in the presence of high carbon dioxide, Naama Lang-Yona, a doctoral candidate in environmental sciences at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, said at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union.

The fungus, called Aspergillus fumigatus, is incredibly common.”
