Cockroaches and Other Violations Closed Down Amsterdam Avenue Restaurant

Along Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan, one restaurant was forced to put up the “closed” sign. And that’s because of cockroaches and a number of other violations.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene gave the said establishment 64 demerits after an inspection on Monday. Following that, it was temporarily shut down.

Particularly, the violation points were given due to the restaurant’s storage of hot food at improper temperatures. It was cited that did not have the proper thermometers to measure food temperature and had an improper sanitation of the surfaces in contact with the food as well.

Based on the website of the department, the recent inspection was actually a follow-up of the one implemented in March 07. During that time, it was cited that the establishment was not keeping cold food at the right temperature. In addition to that, roaches were also found in the place and it was cited not to be vermin-proof.

However, the place was said to reopen on Thursday.

“Amsterdam Restaurant and Tapas Lounge at 1207 Amsterdam Ave., between 119th and 120th streets, was closed by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene after it was cited on Monday for 64 violation points during an ungraded inspection.

A sign on the front door says that the restaurant will reopen on Thursday evening and that it was closed due to “a licensing issue with the DOH.”
